In The Dental Advertiser for 1887, the subject of shrinkage ofrubber during the vulcanizing process was discussed at some length. Itwas shown that during the process of hardening, a mass of rubber com-pound experienced an actual decrease in bulk, its specific gravity beingconsiderably increased. The expansion of rubber by heat also receivedsome notice, and the following experiment was suggested, as affordingproof of the facts asserted : Let a cube of unvulcanized rubber compound be made of abou:inch dimensions. It may easily be built up of squares cut from asheet of gum. Let it be invested in plaster in a dental flask, by placing iton a bed of soft plaster and immediately filli
