At the age ofseventeen he came west with his parentsand settled in Mount Morris. The firstyear he spent as a farmer hand, work- 293 ing foi- Wm. Rine, and then attendedRock River Seminary a nximber of years,during which time he became a memberof the village band and began his musicalcareer. After quitting the seminary hewent to Dixon, and besides deriving ina booljstore played In the Dixon soon became leader of the band andremained there seven years. He thenwent to Freeport and organized a heliconband which afterward consolidated withthe Germania Band as the Grand Union. Prof. D. S. McCosh. Band. Here at Freeport, in 1876, hefirst began to publish music, althoughhe had done some composing in a term of three years in FreeportProfessor McCosb then went to the cityof Chicago and continued to publishmusic and Instruct bands and orchestrason a larger scale. His first band therewas the Sixth Battalion Band, now thefamous Second Regiment Band. Henext became leader of Lyon & Healysfamous band and with it traveled ex-tensively with the St. Bernard Com-mandery of the Masonic fraternity. His last trip with them was to San Fran-cisco. Other bands under his controllater were the West Side Military Bandand Bowmans Military Band, the latterof forty pieces. At one time he furnishedmusic at five of the biggest skatingrinks in Chicago, having in
