Manufacture of big guns at Government Arsenal in Watervliet, A 12" gun is being lifted from a 90' shrinking pit, where a temperature of 800 degrees is maintained. After receiving the recoil band, the gun is lifted. This process takes about 20 hours, including 12 hours to heat the recoil band and 8 hours for cooling off. 16" guns undergo the same procedure.
