Pancreatic cancer. Light micrograph of a section from a pancreatic islet cell carcinoma (cancerous tumour, dark purple). Pancreatic islet cells produce hormones such as insulin and glucagon that regulate blood sugar levels. Some islet cell tumours create an imbalance in the production of one or more of these hormones, leading to a variety of symptoms that affect metabolism. This cancer can grow quickly and metastasise (spread) to other organs. Treatment is by surgical removal of the tumour, or chemotherapy if the cancer is widespread.
