Brain of a Cardiac Arrest Victim
This axial (cross section) CT of the brain was obtained after a patient was resuscitated from a cardiac arrest. There are symmetrical areas of low density (dark areas) in the deep regions of the brain (the basal ganglia) which represents areas of infarction (stroke) due to lack of blood flow as a result of the cardiac arrest. Theses regions are especially vulnerable to lack of oxygen and subsequent damage.
