He died at St. Francis Hospital, La Crosse, Wis., on the 26th day ofMay, 1890, after a long and active life devoted to the Church. He was suc-ceeded by the Rt. Rev. F. X. Katzer, D. D., previously of Green Bay. When the tide of emigration, filling up the territory to the banks of theMississippi, began to ctoss it in the northwest, there were priests ever inadvance to minister to the Catholics. Dubuque was begun in 1S33. TheCatholics there were visited, in 1834, by the Rev. James McMahon, and, in1835, by the Rev. P. Fitzmaurice. The white robe of St. Dominic has the. MOST REV. ARCHBISHOP F. In 1836, Father SamuelMazzuchelli, of the Order of Preachers, commenced the erection of Church, acting as missionary, architect, and collector, giving allhis own means, and rejoicing when, in September, he had it covered in andready for divine service ; the cost, when complete—some five thousand dol-lars—being all contributed in the immediate vicinity. When the Catholic, Anthony Leclaire, founded Davenport in 1836, thesame missionary, aided by him, in April of the following year, laid the corner-stone of St. Anthonys Church, a modest structure, twenty-five feet by forty,built of the first bricks made in the place.
