Whitby (Yorkshire UK,) Horngarth or Penny Hedge traditional ceremony 1906. An historic photograph showing the 1911 annual ceremony of planting the Penny Hedge or Horngarth in the river Esk at Whitby, North Yorkshire, UK. On completion of the hedge the man with the horn blows 'out on ye' (Get Out) challenging the tide to destroy the penny hedge within three tides, in line with a local legend. The custom takes place at Abraham's Bosom on the eve of Ascension Day (40th day after Easter Sunday) , in the mud on the east bank of the River Esk .
