The view presented by these mountains from theanchorage off Sandy Point is a magnificent one. Afterpassing the Second Narrows, Elizabeth Island, so named bySir Francis Drake, comes into sight. At Cape Negro, about14 miles from Sandy Point, is seen the last Southerly spurof the Cordilleras, which run along the Coast and jointhe main ridge beyond Sandy Point. All these spursare clothed with beech forests and thick underwood ofthe Magnolia Sandy Point (Punta Arenas), which is situated at adistance of about 120 miles from Cape Virgins, and is 6i officially known bv the Chilians, to whom it belongs, as LaColonia de Magellanes, was simply a convict settlement upto the year 1877, when it was disestablished in consequenceof a revolt of the convicts and its great distance from the seatof Government—Santiago. Since 1877 the town has largelydeveloped, and the population (composed of all nationalities)now sums up to about 9,000. Sandy Point may be con-sidered the most Southern town in the world.
