Photograph by David Coleman. The Texas State Capitol in Austin stands as an impressive symbol of Texas history and government. Completed in 1888, this architectural masterpiece is renowned for its distinctive sunset red granite exterior and imposing Renaissance Revival style. Rising 308 feet tall, the capitol building surpasses even the Capitol in height, befitting Texas's reputation for doing things on a grand scale. The central dome, topped by the Goddess of Liberty statue, dominates the Austin skyline and serves as a beacon of Texas pride. Designed by architect Elijah E. Myers, the capitol's cruciform plan houses the chambers of the Texas Legislature, the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor, and numerous historical exhibits. The building's ornate interior features a rotunda with a star-patterned floor and portraits of Texas's presidents and governors. The surrounding 22-acre grounds include monuments to the heroes of the Texas Revolution and other significant figures in state history. An underground extension, added in the 1990s, provides additional office space while preserving the historic integrity of the original structure. As the seat of Texas government and a National Historic Landmark, the State Capitol continues to play a vital role in the state's political life while also serving as a major tourist attraction, welcoming over a million visitors annually to experience Texas's unique blend of history, politics, and architectural grandeur.
