Quantum dot samples seen in ultraviolet (UV) light. These samples consist of solutions of cadium selenide (CdSe), which is responding to the ultraviolet light by emitting visible light. The solutions can be engineered to specific wavelengths, and are used for applications such as tracers (quantum dots). The colours correspond to the following wavelengths in nanometres (nm): red (610nm), orange (590nm), green (560nm), blue (480nm), and violet (380nm). Samples courtesy Nanoco Technologies.
