Curiously enough the period in history when,owing to the French Revolution and the career ofNapoleon, Whiggery in England became suspectand discredited, Harrow flourished is the epoch of the great names : then therepassed through the school Byron; and Peel, Pal-merston, Aberdeen and Goderich, not all equallydistinguished but all prime ministers : and AnthonyAshley Cooper seventh Earl of Shaftesbury not in-ferior to any in greatness of soul. He continuedthe Protestant, Low Church (call it by what name youwill) character of the school, and the followersof his Evangelical principles sent their sons much toLord Shaftesburys school. Yet though politics andparties have had their share in the making ofHarrow, the influence has proved but Harrow of to-day has no distinctive political orparty characteristic. And after all the school owesmuch less to opinions than to men. Its leap up innumbers and importance, its rise into the positionof one of the great schools, may be connected withtwo names, Drury and Butler. Dr. Joseph Drury,Headmaster from 1785 to 1805, was one of afamily who served Harrow with unsparing George Butler succeeded him and ruled theschool with wisdom from 1805 to 1829.
