In the following pages is told something of the charmingcountry traversed by the Central New England Railway—acountry remarkable for its great scenic beauty, its wonderfulgeological formations and its historical associations—a countrywhich it is now possible to reach by means of a perfect trainservice. For, what could be more interesting and agreeablethan to take a ride over this road, a ride which is made mostsafe and enjoyable by means of an improved and strengthenedroadbed, and new and luxurious coaches ?. Starting then at Hartford, Connecticuts historic capital,which is the eastern terminus of the road, we commence ourjourney toward the picturesque Litchfield hills. As we roll rapidly along through the level farming districtsof Bloomfield, on each side of the track may be seen extensivefields of tobacco, for the country from Bloomfield to New Hart-ford is famous for its fine quality of tobacco, which, expertsclaim, is superior to the famous Virginia brands. The hurrying engine is drawing us from the rich farminglands of Bloomfield to a scene of wild beauty, for we are nearingthe Talcott mountain range. Probably few of the travelingpublic are aware that this range of hills is the crumbling monu-ment of volcanic action of wide extent and fierce intensity. Bysome authors they have been termed the ancient lavas ofConnecticut, for they were forced up through the Tirassic redsandstone by convulsions greater than those
