The antennic are inserted on the anterior maruin of tlie front, inside of the base of the mandibles, but distant from each otluT. The suture is imbricate only in Thiiiopinus. The species live on decomposing animal and vegetable .sub- stances, or on excrements; rarely (Thiiiopinus) on the shores of the ocean, below high-water mark. Some of them are the largest of tlr family. The genus Staphyliaus, as set forth by Erichsou, has been dis- membered by later authors, to form several of the genera below mentioned. A.
