Cannon and palisades at Fort Caroline National Monument, Jacksonville, Florida, in early morning fog


Located on the mouth of the St. John's River near Jacksonville, FL, Fort Caroline was built by French Huguenots in 1564, and was captured by the Spanish a year later, with all inhabitants killed. The current fort is a reconstruction by the National Park Service.
