Shortly afterwards we reach a rectan-gular recess looking as though it had been quarriedfor a gigantic monolith. Here again the greatdifficulty of starting up is manifested at a glance, though in the same direction up above the recess isso much more deeply cut and the sides so muchnearer to each other that ones safety is assured for thesecond half of the climb. In this case also, the middleis reached by a slight detour on the left. A few yardsfurther along the Progress are two thin cracks unitingat a height of twenty feet and leading to a platformten feet higher. Thence a perfectly safe cleft passes. % ^J^.WMS
