Polar walk of confidence. CANADA EXCITING images give you a chance to see an 800-pound polar bear as close as any photographer is likely to get - while remaining alive. These images, snapped in the town of Churchill, Canada, capture the apex predator’s gaze from barely four feet away. Images such as these are extremely rare because a distance of at least 328 feet between a photographer and a wild polar bear is always maintained. But Johnny Hayward, a retired Canadian photojournalist, got this exhilarating opportunity when a polar bear climbed onto the side of his tundra buggy. Tundra buggies are enclosed tour buses about 50 to 60 feet long that can carry up to 50 people across the harsh tundra of the Arctic Circle. “Polar bears do get curious about the vehicles sometimes and try to examine them up close,” he said. “But, so far, I have not heard of them harming anyone inside. “I was thrilled when the polar bear came to our side and quickly took out my wide-angle camera to snap its picture. “Luckily, I was safe inside, and the animal quickly moved on.” ENDs
