ANATOMY OF THE BRAIN


Anatomical model showing the exterior of the human brain or encephalon (left lateral view). The encephalon is composed of the diencephalon, covered by the cerebrum (flesh-colored). The cerebellum (in maroon) and the brain stem (in white) lie under the cerebrum in the posterior area. The brain is divided into two hemispheres (shown here, the left hemisphere), each of which is composed of four lobes - the frontal (anterior region), parietal (superior region), temporal (4, lateral region) and occipital (posterior region) lobes. The temporal lobe is bordered by the sulcus lateralis. The surface of the cerebral cortex has a number of bumps or ridges, known as gyri, separated by folds known as sulci. Shown here, the anterior central gyrus (6) and the postcentral gyrus (7), separated by the central sulcus. Below the encephalon, the pituitary gland, which secretes a number of hormones, can also be seen (25, in orange). The brain stem (in white) is composed of the mesencephalon, followed by the pons and the medulla oblongata (38, oliva medullae oblongatae). It relays nerve impulses between the various parts on the brain and between the brain and the spinal cord of which it is an extension. Ten pairs of cranial nerves (roman numerals III to XII) emerge from the brain stem.
