An historic engraving showing the 17th century Italian Sulphur industry in the crater of Solfatara Volcano. (Solfatara di Pozzuoli as it is known is situated at Pozzuoli, near Naples. It last erupted in in 1198 but is considered dormant rather than extinct. The area is well known for its bradyseism (intermittent rising and falling of the ground surface). The vapours were also sought by visitors for medical purposes, a trade that originated in Roman times. Alum and Kaolin has also been mined in the crater in past times.
