CD-3, Fighting Counterfeit Drugs
Authentic and counterfeit Alli packaging being screened by CD-3. CD-3 a small portable device invented by FDA scientists, is being deployed to screen for counterfeit and sub-standard malaria drugs in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. Using wavelengths of light, CD-3 reveals differences between authentic and counterfeit drugs that look the same to the naked eye. The CD-3 (counterfeit detection device) is a battery-operated, hand-held and inexpensive tool that costs a fraction of the price of existing laboratory-based and field-deployable technologies.
