Frankish soldiers of the 8th century
"Some tied their hair behind; others, the chiefs, for example, to render themselves more terrifying, tied their hair up on the head like a plume (79)." "One notices already, toward the 8th century, breastplates made of leather, others made in the form of scales, and suits of chain-mail (80). This figure is taken from a tomb in the church of the abbey of Bonneval en Beauce." Handcolored copperplate engraving from Robert von Spalart's "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages" (1796).
