By shortening the shootsas here directed, all the buds will generallypush strong shoots, and shew good bunchesof fruit the spring following; whereas if theyhad been left two or three feet longer, itwould be uncertain whether some of the Fig. buds at the lower part would push shoots, which if they did, would be weakly. Butevery desired advantage both as to fruit andwood is obtained, by pursuing the directionsgiven. All those lateral shoots which pro- 280 TREATMENT OF THE duced fruit, as c, d, must be cut clean awayto the stem which they proceed from. The following summer the Vines will bearfruit for the length of ten feet, and twobunches of fruit may be allowed upon eachbud, all others must be pinched off. Eachuppermost new shoot upon the shoots, a, b, ofthe last years wood, must not be permitted toretain any fruit whatever, but the uppermostnew shoot upon the shoot a, must be trainedto the top of the house and be stopped asbefore directed. Also the uppermost newshoot upon the shoot b, must be allowed togrow to nine feet in length, and then bestopped by cutting away two feet off theend, at which length it must afterwards bekept during summer. It will generallyhappen that there will be several buds breakfrom the oldest wood
