This expedition gave AaronBurr an opportunity of showing the real ability hepossessed in the direction of military life. Hereached the rank of major and gained a great repu-tation as an olincer. He became a member of staff, but left this position to becomean aide to Gen. Putnam. The acquaintance betweenWashington and Burr did not result in producingany affection or mutual esteem. Burr hated Wash-ington, and the latter distrusted the apparently bril-liant young officer. In 1777 Burr was appointedlieutenant-colonel and distinguished himself at thebattle of Monmouth, where he commanded a bri-gade. Later he was in command at a point in Orangecounty, N. Y., where he became acquainted withMrs. Prevost, the widow of an ten years older than he, with a family of twosons. In March, 1779, Burrs health was so impaired that he re-signed, and, as soon ashe could safely do so,resumed the study oflaw, and in 1783 wasadmitted to pract
