False-colour anteroposterior X-ray of the adult lumbar and sacral spine. The image includes the bottom (12th) thoracic vertebra (at top) and below it, all five lumbar vertebrae (L1 is at top, L5 at bottom). Immediately below L5 is the sacrum, by which the spine is connected to the innominate (hip) bones of the pelvis through the sacro-iliac joints. Left & right sacro-iliac joints are visible as dark lines. The transverse processes of all the lumbar vertebrae are visible projecting to the left & right of the spine. The spinous processes (which project towards the observer) appear as elongated, oval features over the vertebral bodies.
