14th century theological cosmography. This geocentric depiction of the Universe is supported by God (top) with St Thomas and St Augustine at bottom left and right. At centre is a T-O (orbis terrarum) map of the Earth, showing three continents, Asia, Europe and Africa. The 21 ascending circles surrounding the Earth are: water, air and fire, the five known planets, the Sun, the Moon, the star-studded sky with the zodiac symbols, the crystalline sky (Primo Mobile) and then the nine hierarchies of angels. This fresco was painted by Piero di Puccio between 1389 and 1391 in the Campo Santo, Piazza dei Miracoli, Pisa, Italy.
