One of the rivers was broadand shallow, and its clear water ran overgravel, brawling and fretting when it cameupon a large stone, and making here and therea pleasant little fall. This river in the winter-time could rise high and run with a strong cur-rent, and there were days and sometimes weekswhen we could not send our men and horsesacross its ford.
