Famous engineer (1810 to 1900) who invented the hydraulic crane and subsequently established shipyards and the armaments industry on Tyneside, which is still there today, manufacturing tanks, etc., for the British army. Also invented gun rifling and owned the first house in the world, Cragside, to be powered by hydroelectricity. Sculpture by Hamo Thornycroft.
