A catechism of mythology; containing a compendious history of the heathen gods and heroes, indispensable to a correct knowledge of the ancient poets and the classics: with 75 engravingsTo which is added, The mythology of northern Europe, translated from the French .. . e, as the first principle of things is ineffable and super-essen-tial, all things proceed from him ineffably and super-essentially;and other intermediate causes are necessary to the evolution ofthings into distinct existence. Hence, Jupiter, who is the Dimi-urgus or maker of the world, is not, according to this theology, the First Caose. The genuine Pagan creed, as given by Maximus Tyrius, wholived under Marcus Antonius, is worthy of attention, viz. Thereis one God, the king and father of all things, and many gods sonsof God, ruling together with him. This the Greek says, and thebarbarian says, the inhabitant of the continent, and he whodwells near the sea; and if you even proceed to the utmost shoresof the ocean, there, too, there are gods rising very near to some, and setting very near to others. By the rising and setting gods,he means the stars, which, according to the pagari theology, aredivine animals, co-operating with the First Cause in the govern-ment of the world. THE END. PL I. PLATE I. 1. Fatum or Destiny. 2. Janus. 3. Saturn, 4. Cjbele, M
