Cable ferry across the river Rhine in Basel (Basle, Bale, Basilea) Switzerland with Basel Munster (Cathedral) in the background

These traditional ferries cross the River Rhine at several points in Basel. They are engineless, being powered by the force of the current. When the ferry operator is ready to cross he pushes the rudder hard over and the boat swings out into the current. It is restrained by a cable an a pulley, from which flags are hanging (to make it visible to other craft), that is fixed to a second cable running across the river. The ferry ploughs across the river from bank to bank, powered only by the current.
