With the unfertilized eggs, somewhat longer ex- posures are necessary. It was first thought that the action of the oxalated sea water was due to the oxalate ion. However, experiments with potassium oxalate gave no support to this view, and it was realized that the effect produced by the ammonium oxalate was due to the ammonium ion. Indeed, various types of ammonium salts all give essentially the same results. In addi- tion to the oxalate, the acetate, chloride, and sulfate were successfully 'mm.
