A few carpenters or cabinet makers equipped withsome simple hand-power tools sufficed for carrying out allnecessary repairs to the woodwork of the rolling stock, andsuch repairs to the operating equipment as could not be madeby a local machinist were turned over to the manufacturer ofthe apparatus or some out-of-town machine shop. But therapid growth of electric transportation lines, combined withtheir consolidation into great systems, is quickly changing the. GENERAL VIEW OF SANDPAPERING MACHINE, SHOWINGCONTROLLING GEAR old state of affairs, because the care of the more extensiveequipment now required makes it good policy to install a well-furnished machine tool and woodworking department capableof coping with every phase of the maintenance problem. It isundeniable that the possession of such facilities secures manyeconomies in operation by avoiding the time and expense oftransporting injured equipment to distant points and by givingthe management every opportunity to see that the repairs arecarried out properly from beginning to end. The maintenance of the rolling stock of a railway naturallyinvolves the installation of a number of woodworking tools,and since much of the woodwork on cars requires a good finish,the value of having a sandpapering machine should not beoverlooked.
