In a \vork professing to deal with the representative men ofClevehind, it is eminently proper that he who has represented theinterests of Clevehind in Congress for six years with a fidelityunsurpassed by any of his predecessors in the national councils, andwho won for the district he represented a prominence hitherto notaccorded to it, should find a conspicuous place. The six years-service of Judge Spalding in Congress as the Representative fromthe Eighteenth Ohio District forms a period in the history of the cityof which the citizens, irrespective of party predilections, have reasonto be proud. Rufus Paine Spalding is a native of Massachusetts, having beenborn on the 3rd of May, 1T9S, at West Tisbury, on the island ofMarthas Vineyard.
