This miniature showing Kriemhild traveling to Etzel that was included in the Codex Hundeshagen, the only surviving illuminated version of the German national epic, the Nibelungenlied (Song of the Nibelungs). which is the tale of Siegfried and the Burgundians. It dates to the 15th century. Siegfried wants to marry Kriemhild, the princess of Burgundy. Prince Siegfried of Xanten is the Sigurd of Norse mythology. Siegfried is later killed and Kriemhild demands revenge. When she learns that King Etzel, who lives in the lands of the Huns, wishes to marry her, she travels there, as seen here, and accepts his proposal as she sees it a good way to solicit help to follow through on getting revenge for Siegfried's death.
