Spraying is an insurance, and every fruit-grower and gardener should insure himself against failures in order to succeed. In some seasons spraying may seem useless, but the next sea.^on will produce results that will repay him for the at- tention given. Spraying must be done thoroughly to be effec- tive. It should not be done without the knowledge as to the nature of the insects and how they destroy. These mav be divided into two viz., (I) leaf eating. (2) sucking. Both require separate treatments. The leaf eating caterpillars, potato-bugs, etc., require a stomach poison, which is sprayed on to the plant and intended to be eaten. The sucking insects, plant lice, aphides, etc., require a contact poison such as the Tobacco Extracts, Kerosene Emulsion, etc., whereby their en- tire body is covered with an irritant and their breathing pores closed. , The fungicides listed are to be used for plant diseases. The cheapest and most effective iivay to combat these is to spray early in the season and prevent same. Fruit trees, potatoes, tomatoes, beans, etc., thus treated will thrive, where others fail.
