In the latter part of the eighteenth century, Jean-JacquesRousseau had sounded the call of back to nature, and, in the reactionagainst the ugliness of the Industrial Revolution, the back-to-nature idea tookroot and became one of the more popular nineteenth-century escape mecha-nisms. So it was natural that Banninster, who loved the sea and the outdoors, settled on these as his subjects. Most of Bannisters landscapes are bucolic, and he avoided the overtintrusion of grandeur into his pictures that was popular in the Hudson RiverSchool, which glorified and romanticized nature. Although Bannister obviouslyenjoyed the picturesque, he did not look at nature merely as a pleasing setting. Portrait of John Brown (detail) by David Bustill Bow-ser. Signed and dated 1858.
