PITON DE LA FOURNAISE, REUNION ISLAND: Headshot of Gabriel Barathieu. Could this be as close as you’ll ever get to a selfie from the surface of the sun? On closer inspection these images show a brave soul doused in an orange glow getting perilously close to the mouth of an erupting volcano. Other shots show the molten lava flowing freely creating an incredible vision, which you could be forgiven for thinking was our very own red hot sun. Photographer Gabriel Barathieu (32) from French Reunion Island snapped these pictures of Reunion Island’s Piton de la Fournaise Volcano as part of his mission

The name translates to “Peak of the Furnace Volcano”.
