A press photo taken in 1919 of crowds of striking policemen occupying Downing Street, London during a lightning strike by police over suppression of their trade union. The police strikes of 1918 and 1919 in the United Kingdom resulted in the British government establishing proposals of the Police Act, establishing the Police Federation of England and Wales as the representative body for the police. The Act also banned police from belonging to or affiliating with any trade union.
