It isstill, however, fettered to some extent,but there is a prospect of assistance beingforthcoming to enable it to devote itselfto the practical work Ling to its has been developing so rapidly inmany ways that it will soon have pro-blems of its own, and the Church that isto grapple with them must be free ofanxiety regarding building schemes andfinancial burdens, and able to concentrateits energy on practical congregationaland aggressive work. XVII—ST GEORGES = IN-THE = WEST PARISH St. Georges-in-the-West Parish Church. The name of this church is derived fromthe important and busy George Street offwhich it stands and from the West Parishwhich gave it birth. The proposal toraise a new congregation in the GeorgeStreet district of the city was taken upwith great heartiness by the members ofthe West Church during the ministry ofRev. Henry Cowan (now ProfessorCowan), and the interest was maintainedduring the ministries of his successors—Rev. A. Irvine Robertson and Rev. J. Mitchell. There had never beena Chapel of Ease within the West Iarish,but it was felt that something ought ube attempted in the way of Church ex-tension. The ministers of the West werespecially prominent in their support of themovement. Dr. Cowan was largely in-strumental in securing it6 initiation ; Robertson furthered its prospectswith great heartiness; and Dr. MitfordMitchell helped to bring it to a successfulcompletion, a
