A new whistle designedon organ-pipe principles has recently beenplaced on the market by the General Elec-tric Company which does away with thistrouble. Heretofore air whistles have l)ccn de-signed along the same lines as a steam-blown whistle. It is well known thatsteam whistles operated by air give a verydifferent tone, the cause being due in partto the condensation of the steam as itissues from a restricted orifice, which in-creases its density. No such conditionexists with air, so that the tone of anair-blown steam whistle is harsh and shrill.
