The Oxford English Dictionary, known as ‘OED’ was launched in 1857 by the Philological Society, a London-based organization devoted to the scholarly study of language. Its humble beginnings started in a garden shed at the first editor, James Murray’s home in Mill Hill in London before moving to its present site of Oxford University Press based in Oxford in England in 1879.
