Via Ugo Bassi like many of the main shopping streets in Bologna in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, are high ceiling porticoes or colonnades with a roof structure over a walkway supported with large arches. On the ceilings of some porticos in Bologna, are famous frescos illustrating scenes from Italian history, mythology and daily life. The idea of a portico originated in ancient Greece and soon spread to many countries.
