BIRD, Director I am pleased to have an opportunity atthis time to present the plans of the de-partment of physical education to the Alum-ni through the Bulletin. People who are somewhat unfamiliar withthis important phase of education are aptto think of it in terms of dumbbells, indianclubs or acrobats. I believe that we shouldconsider physical education from a broadstandpoint and with a hig purpose. PhjSi-cal Education should establish health, bringthe body to physical perfection, develop en-ergy, strengthen the v/ill and the practical. O. C. BIRD judgment, develop good fellowship and rightideals of honor and sport. Our purpose is,therefore, development of the physical,mental, moral, and social qualities of thestudents of Ohio University. This calls fora very troad program and must include agreat variety of activities. I will outlinecarry on this year. 1. Physical Examination for all new stu-dents. 2. Freshman gymnasium requirement. 3. Intramural athletics. 4. Intercollegiate atMetics. 5. Major course in Physical Examination and Freshmen Requirement Each student enteiing the university- forthe first time is given a physical examina-tion. Students are then grouped accordingto their physical condition and special exer- cises given those who are in need of department will attempt to keep intouch with defective students during theirentire college course.
