Leishmaniasis. Foot with multiple disfiguring skin lesions caused by infection with Leishmania sp. protozoan parasites. This is the diffuse cutaneous (diffuse skin) form of the disease. It closely resembles a form of leprosy, for which it is often misdiagnosed. It is difficult to treat compared to the other forms of the disease, which are treated with drugs. The parasites are transmitted by the bite of an infected sandfly. Photographed in Ethiopia.
