When thejfraternity of Freemasons wished to erecta temple in SanFrancisco, they found the only sitewhich would suit them belonged to James Lick, andwas part of the square upon which he designed toerect the Lick House. Of course it was not for , one of the brethren frankly approachedhim and in a straightforward manner told him itwas the only spot which suited them. The result. which was ever susceptible to the emotions of sym-pathy for his fellow-men. In 1874 he placed his en-tire property in the hands of seven trustees to be de-voted to public and charitable purposes. In thespring of 1875 the bequests, aggregating severalmillions of dollars, were changed in some respectsto the Academy of Natural Sciences and to TheSociety of California Pioneers, of which latter hewas president at his bequeathed a one-hundredVara lot, at the corner of Fourthand Market Streets, in SanFrancisco, and also the residueof his vast estate to be equallydivided between the two socie-ties after his various legacieshad been paid. He died , 1876. Among his many be-quests he did not forget the far-off home of his childhood andthe loved ones whose dust wasmingling with the soil of theold Keystone State, for on abeautiful April day in 1876 wasunveiled an
