Coral-like polyps. 18th-century journal page illustrating coralline (coral-like) polyps found in the waters around the Mediterranean island of Malta. The illustrations are by the British naturalist John Ellis (). At right and left (A and B) are illustrations of the whole animal. Between are details of the internal tubular anatomy, with the feeding tentacles at top, and the base at bottom. This page is from volume 48 (1753-4) of the journal 'Philosophical Transactions', published by the Royal Society of London. Ellis, an expert on corals, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1754.
