Fiber.—The fiber is similar in every respect to the preceding and is useil for thesame purposes, some of the strips being exported to England for use as tie mate-rial, especially in hop fields. Among its native nses may bo mentioned cordage andfishing nets. This species is now regarded by botanists as identical with the next. Raphia vinifera. Bamboo Palm. The stems are used for the frameworlc ofnative dwellings, and the leaves, bound with lines, are used fur thatching. Fromthe trunk an intoxicating beverage called Bourdon is obtained. The governor of Lagos, in a report to the Kew authorities in 1891, states that itwould be impossible to calculate the area occupied by these forests, but it may beaccepted without doubt that they extend throughout the length of the colony,and to a distance of at least 15 miles from the seacoast, and that over this area ofabout 5,000 square miles they form a considerable proportion of the vegetation, nextonly in numbers to the oil palm and the mangrove.
