Effects of Erect Positions.—Young infants should neverbe placed in the sitting position even when propped with pillows ;their muscles are not sufficiently developed to maintain the spinalcolumn in its proper position and curvatures are apt to result(Figs. 40 and 41). As soon as children are old enough to run about they shouldbe out of doors as much as possible. During the summer monthsthey should have a great variety of occupations, so that whenthey are tired of walking they may sit, and while resting onegroup of muscles, may be exercising another, in a sand-pile, forexample. Unless there is a good variety of exercises, children in thecity are liable to develop the leg muscles and leave the chest,back, and arm muscles but poorly developed.
