The larger Haddon Hall was built during the 1920s. Today it is ‘Resorts’ Casino Hotel. Atlantic City is a coastal resort city in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States, known for its hotels, casinos and the famous boardwalk. The first boardwalk was built in 1870 along a portion of the beach in an effort to help hotel owners keep sand out of their premises. Because of its popularity, the boardwalk was expanded in width, lengthened and modified over the years. The length of the boardwalk, before the destructive 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane, was about 7 miles (11 km). The Chalfonte House (Chalfonte Hotel) is an eight-storey brick building, Atlantic City's first ‘skyscraper’ – it was designed by architect Addison Hutton and opened its doors to guests in 1904. Haddon Hall was constructed in stages in the 1920s. The 11-story wing facing the Boardwalk was constructed first, with the 15-storey centre and 11-storey rear wings added later in the decade. Soon after the modern Haddon Hall was completed, it was joined with the adjacent via a skyway. Today it is ‘Resorts’ Casino Hotel, a hotel and casino complex. The resort completed an expansion in 2004, adding the 27-storey Rendezvous Tower and the two earlier buildings were painted white. This image is from an old American amateur colour transparency.
