In spite of the range and average of length for both species examined being statistically similar, we expect that the variation of each character compared will decrease as the sample size increases. We suggest that a larger sample size for each southern and northern group, including intermediate populations, as well as a detailed study on the osteology and molecular genetic analysis should be conducted to evaluate the taxonomic status of the southern form "lctalurus meridionalis" Acknowledgements We thank C.
