Local anaesthetic. Hospital doctor uses a syringe to inject local anaesthetic into the skin above the lower spine of a patient, prior to lumbar puncture. Once the base of the spine is anaesthetised, a lumbar puncture can be given, in which a hollow needle is inserted between two of the lumbar vertebrae to draw out cerebrospinal fluid. The fluid is then examined for diagnostic purposes.
