The big Otago Gold Rush in New Zealand started in the end of May 1861 with an Australian finding gold in Gabriel's Gully and attracted several thousand miners to the country. Where they found gold,they recovered the gold with shovel and pan. After this easy accessible gold was gone, industrial mining began. Normally small companies dammed water on a higher level and brought the water with huge tubings to the area to raise deep gravels to the surface. In sluice boxes the gold was captured and the mud was washed St. Bathans two companies washed with this sluicing from 1873 to 1932 a 120 meter high hill away and left a 68 meter deep hole in a landscape remembering the surface of the moon. Luckily when the work stopped, water from the ground filled the hole and created the Blue Lake of St. lake turned the settlement to a popular holiday spot in New Zealand's summer holidays. Als der Goldrausch in den 1860er Jahren Tausende Goldsucher nach Central Otago auf der Südinsel Neuseelands brachte, hatten die Männer rasch das leicht erreichbare Gold mit Schaufeln und Goldwäscherpfannen aus dem Untergrund geholt. Danach stauten kleine Unternehmen in höheren Lagen Seen auf und leiteten das Wasser zu den Fundstätten. Das Hochdruckk-Wasser riss dort tiefe Gräben in die Landschaft. Aus dem mitgerissenen Schlamm gewannen die Firmen das Gold und leiteten den Rest weg. Auf diese Weise spülten die beiden Firmen von 1873 bis 1932 in St. Bathans einen 120 Meter hohen Hügel komplett weg und schufen an seiner Stelle ein 68 tiefes Loch. Wie an vielen anderen Orten in Central Otago hinterließen die Goldsucher eine Mondlandschaft. In St. Bathans aber füllte Grundwasser aus den umliegenden Hügeln das tiefe Loch mit Wasser und schuf so den "Blauen See". Dieses Gewässer hat St. Bathans wohl als winzige Siedlung überleben lassen, weil heute viele Neuseeländer in den Sommerferien hier ihren Urlaub verbringehn.
